Intro to Handstands

At Rogue Room
Sat 26 Sep 2-4pm - £40

A beginners workshop held at the Shoreditch-based movement space The Rogue Room.

This workshop breaks the handstand down into four essential skills: Aligning, Kicking, Balancing and Bailing.

We’ll work through full-body conditioning, shoulder mobility and flexibility to help you find a more efficient handstand line. You’ll learn how to kick up with control, understand the mechanics of balancing upside down, and importantly how to safely bail when things don’t quite go to plan.

Expect plenty of drills, individual practice and practical tools you can take away and continue working on independently. We will end with some Q&A with Guillermo.

PREREQUISITES

A comfortable 30-second plank hold. A 10-second crow hold is helpful, but not essential.

Please come injury-free and without any conditions that could make handstand practice unsuitable.

You don’t need a handstand to come to a handstand workshop. That’s kind of the point.

Handstands in
Crystal Palace

At New Wave Training Academy
Sun 25 Oct 12-2pm - £40 - MAX 12 people

A beginners workshop held at the martial arts training facility New Wave Training Academy.

This workshop splits the handstand into four essential skills: Aligning, Kicking, Balancing and Bailing.

This session combines full-body strength work, shoulder mobility and flexibility training to develop a cleaner, more efficient handstand alignment. You'll practise controlled kick-ups, get to grips with the mechanics of inverted balance, and learn safe bail-out techniques for when things go wrong.

There'll be plenty of drills, solo practice time, and practical tools to keep building on after the session ends. At the end there will be Q&As with Guillermo so you leave with no questions unanswered.

PREREQUISITES

A comfortable 30-second plank hold.

Please come injury-free and without any conditions that could make handstand practice unsuitable.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Until 25 Sep: Full refund
26 Sep - 11 Oct: Half refund
From 10 Oct: No refund

PRESS TO HANDSTAND

Mechanics and Programming

In collaboration with Juan Amo from Amovement, this workshop explores all sides of achieving (or perfecting) the press to handstand:

  • Mobility

  • Strength

  • Skill (putting the above two together through mechanics)

  • Programming

A two-hour experience to provide participants with all they need in order to be their own guides of their journey to achieve their straddle press to handstand.

NEURAL

A perceptual exploration into handbalancing

Minimum Requirements: solid 20-sec handstand againt the wall

NEURAL is a workshop that was born from a systematic attempt at finding new ways of challenging the handstand that are not the usual shapes (straddle, tuck and transitions).

Manifold types of cognitive load to challenge our balance are explored such as unusual head positions, eye movements, talking upside down, sense restriction, inverted arithmetics, object manipulation...

Movement is still explored but more from an exploratory (dance and restriction frameworks) and interactive element (partner work).

HANDS TO FEET TO HANDS

Exploring transitions in and out of the handstand

A more exploratory but guided workshop exploring the space of possibilities in between standing on our hands and standing on our feet.

Borne out of a personal drive to tap into an artistic void in the traditional handbalancing world, Guillermo leads the participants through different methodologies to encourage creation of new answers to the question of getting from our feet to our hands and back.
